I was with the S A N F (South African Navel Force), which was established only in 1942, during the war. I was an electrical officer, at first for the development (het ontwerp), the installation and running (bedryf) of a method of finding (opsporings metode) of midget submarines of the Durban Harbour entrance. After that I was responsible for maintenace of 'degaussing' ships meant to protect them against magnetic mines. Later the development of anti-submarine search methods and lastly as the A S F D O (Anti-Submarine fixed defense officer). I was demobilised in April 1946. (Translated from the Dutch). (A Semmelink). At the beginning of 1972 the University of Cape Town on the insistance of prof R W Guelke approved the establishment of a 'Central Accoustics Laboratory/Sound Research Laboratory'. Bert is since his return from the USA the head of the laboratory. He installed the laboratory and does his own research there. ' Apart from his research into noise, animal sounds, spoken language, music etc, the laboratory will be able to contribute to the use of sound in industry. As far as noise is concerned the unit will be eager to help architects and builders with advice...' (Die Burger 18 July 1972; The Cape Argus 10 Jul 1972).

Bert was also a co-founder and first president of the South African Accoustic Institute (1975).
